Bridge Curfews

The Port of New Orleans owns and operates four bridges (St. Claude Avenue, Florida Avenue, Almonaster Avenue, and Seabrook) across the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal. To help expedite vehicular traffic during peak drive times, the bridges will not be drawn for maritime traffic during restricted hours on weekdays (Monday-Friday), excluding federal holidays, except in the case of an emergency. These restricted hours are known as bridge curfews.

Florida Avenue Bridge Update

The Florida Avenue bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic at 6 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018, to allow for the repair of a 12-inch sewer force main on the Lower 9th Ward side of the Industrial Canal.

Work is expected to be completed by Friday, Sept. 28. That schedule, however, could change due to unforeseen circumstances such as inclement weather.

Motorists will be directed toward the North Claiborne Avenue Bridge throughout the duration of the repairs. The bridge will remain open to marine traffic and rail traffic.

Westbound traffic on Florida Avenue will be directed south on Caffin Avenue to North Claiborne Avenue, where motorists can cross the Industrial Canal.

Eastbound traffic on Florida Avenue will be directed south on France Street to Poland Avenue and, again, to North Claiborne Avenue.

Wallace C. Drennan Co., an S&WB contractor, will be performing the work. The sewer main is located under the eastern approach to the lift bridge.

The S&WB has been working closely with the City and the Port of New Orleans to coordinate the bridge closure. For more information on the repair work please contact the Sewerage and Water Board Communications Office at 504-585-2254.
