Port NOLA Maritime Career Webinar Success: Connecting Community and Workforce

In October, Port NOLA hosted a Maritime Career Info Webinar about careers available in the region’s maritime industry for local residents to learn about the variety of jobs that are available on or near the river. The series includes presentations by industry and education stakeholders who outline career paths for jobs such as longshoreman, deckhand, trucker, Harbor Police Department officer, and facilities maintenance.

The October session was held via Zoom webinar due to COVID-19 considerations, and a recording has been posted online for ongoing access. Port NOLA hosts these info sessions throughout the year, with the intention of showcasing how the maritime industry provides entry level opportunities that can lead to sustainable long-term careers with family-supporting salaries.

Louisiana’s maritime industry is a critically important economic engine, locally, regionally, and statewide, with Louisiana ports creating one in five jobs in the state. Port NOLA and its tenants alone generate more than 20,000 jobs in the State and nearly $4 billion of economic impact, with an average salary of $74,000, which is 41% higher than the local average.

As a landlord port, Port NOLA provides the infrastructure necessary for tenants and partners to operate efficiently. Through these educational sessions, the Port strives to connect residents of the region with information about maritime jobs, schools that provide training and the tenants that need workers with specific skills.
